Start Here: Bronze Age Aegean Clothing

Bronze Age Aegean clothing is fascinating, beautiful, and difficult to reconstruct responsibly. Unlike later periods with surviving garments, the evidence for Minoan and Mycenaean clothing is often indirect. Researchers must work from frescoes, seals, figurines, textile tools, archaeological fragments, comparative evidence, and the physical realities of weaving and wearing cloth.

This site approaches reconstruction as an argument, not a costume pattern. Each project asks what the evidence suggests, what remains uncertain, and how practical experimentation can help test possible interpretations.

    What is a Heanos?

    The heanos is a garment associated with Bronze Age Aegean dress, especially in modern discussions of Minoan clothing. It is visually striking, but difficult to reconstruct with certainty because no complete surviving garment has been recovered. Why do we call a Minoan garment by a Greek name?  I n   The Iliad   book 14, pages 176-186, Homer describes Hera “fastening her   heanos ,   kata stehos   (at or below the breast), with   evetai   (fibulae, brooches, or a clasp with pins [of gold])”.   Modern  historians don't have an identified name for this garment in Linear A or Linear B so for now, heanos will do.   Most interpretations rely on indirect evidence, including frescoes, figurines, seals, textile tools, loom technology, and comparative garment construction.     Why Bronze Age Aegean Clothing Is Difficult to Reconstruct

    Bronze Age Aegean clothing is difficult to reconstruct because the evidence is incomplete, indirect, and often filtered through later interpretation. Unlike some later periods, researchers do not have complete surviving Minoan or Mycenaean garments that can simply be measured, copied, and remade. Archaeological excavations have produced textile fragments, but not full garments. These fragments are valuable because they provide information about materials and weaving techniques, but they do not give us complete patterns, seam placement, garment dimensions, or instructions for how clothing was worn. Another challenge is that the written evidence is limited. Linear B tablets from Mycenaean contexts, including Knossos, provide important information about textile production, wool, linen, workers, and palace administration.
